Our Vision.
New Zealand Zero.

Our vision is to inspire, lead and support growers and creators of food and beverage who use zero fossil fuels during the growing process. We want to be the cornerstone of this agricultural and societal movement, and lead positive change for a more sustainable future.

Our Values

These are the values that NZ0 holds true and that guide us throughout our journey.

Value 01

We care about the environment and our impact on it for future generations.

First and foremost, we grow and harvest produce without the use of fossil fuels. We seek value-added waste opportunities for our produce, primarily through food and beverage alternatives but otherwise back into the earth in a considered and circular approach. We seek to eliminate, or if not possible, reduce, fossil fuel use across all other aspects of our supply chain, including transit and packaging.
Value 02

We always seek to innovate and create positive change for a more sustainable future

We constantly seek to discuss and evaluate the systems we’re part of, the impact of our growing methods, our harvesting, supply chain, and packaging. We strive to be innovative and adaptive and generate positive change.
Value 03

We are authentic, real, and transparent.

We are transparent about our process, across the complete supply chain. Where we cannot reduce supply chain emissions, we identify them, account for them, and seek ways to manage them towards zero emissions.
Value 04

We are accountable for all our decisions and actions.

We embrace the opportunity to make mistakes and go down the wrong path, but we will make sure we learn from these mistakes so they don’t occur again.

We set out to change day-to-day operations that were typically fossil fuel based ... to instead use the latest electric technology.

FAQ

What is NZ0’s main purpose and goal?

Our goal is to pursue real, systematic change within the food industry with respect to fossil fuel use, environmental considerations, and sustainability.

While carbon offsetting is a necessary aspect that is currently required throughout the supply chain, it should only be permissible when it should be currently technologically impossible to avoid.
FAQ

How do you grow your produce fossil fuel free?

When we started our first orchard, we set out to change day-to-day operations that were typically fossil fuel based - including irrigation, frost fighting fans, and orchard vehicles - to instead use the latest electric technology. Supporting this electric technology, is an extensive on-site solar power production which means that the orchard should have close to net zero energy costs. There is the occasion during winter where power is taken from the national grid, but this is countered by excess energy that is sold back to the national grid during peak production times - often in the summer.

What is NZ0 Certification?

We are currently working with AsureQuality to create a new, modern and relevant accreditation for zero fossil fuel use. This is a standard that will be recognised internationally and will take into account various aspects of existing ISO standards.

The goal of developing this certification is to create a gold standard, with a clear delineation between fundamental change in emission production and the ability to offset them, which is currently used by other producers who claim to be carbon-free. We understand that offsetting is a necessary aspect that is currently required throughout the supply chain, but NZ0 will prohibit its use if it can be realistically replaced by emission-free technologies. The standard and methods to achieve this certification will be open-source, and made available to all converting and complying NZ producers.
